Public Notice: COVID-19 Pandemic

March 15th, 2020

Due to the on-going COVID-19 circumstances, the Township of Terrace Bay’s Municipal Emergency Control Group (MECG) met March 15th at 1pm to discuss its Emergency Plan procedures for Public Health Emergencies.  Terrace Bay’s MECG group consists of the Mayor, Chief Administrative Officer/Clerk, Fire Chief, and Public Works Supervisor.

Our local North of Superior Healthcare Group (NOSH Group) has convened an Incident Management Committee (ICM) with representatives from the Hospitals in Terrace Bay and Marathon, the clinics in Schreiber, Terrace Bay and Marathon, and the Thunder Bay District Health Unit with the purpose of information sharing and proactive planning for the processes, people and supplies necessary should the virus reach our communities.

The Township of Terrace Bay strives to maintain a culture of safety and well-being in our community and are working closely with our public health partners to ensure the safety of all. Our Mayor and Management Staff will be participating in the Incident Management Committee’s first meeting this upcoming week.  Read More

The Municipality wishes to remind the public that this is a time for calm and thoughtfulness. Both Council and Staff will continue to monitor the situation very carefully, and will continue to make decisions that are measured, precautionary and in the community’s best interests.

As per recommendations from today’s MECG meeting, The Municipality will continue to provide all critical services during this time and are working hard to minimize the disruptions to programs and other services. The Trestle Ridge Ski Hill has announced their closure on March 14th, 2020 and the Arena will remain closed. All other recreational facilities and programs will remain open at this time.

Although there are no confirmed cases in the TBDHU area and no evidence of community transmission of the virus (March 15th, 2020 at 2:24pm), Staff has been directed, and are taking all precautions with respect to hygiene best practices, cleaning and disinfection at our facilities in order to ensure all safety measures are being taken. An emphasis will be placed on cleaning “high-touch” surfaces and a concerted effort will be made to reinforce the importance of regular hand washing and cough/sneeze etiquette.

We strongly encourage the public to be extra diligent in protecting themselves and others against illness-causing germs by:

  • Washing your hands often with soap and water, or use alcohol-based hand sanitizer;
  • Covering your cough and sneeze with a tissue or into your arm, not your hand;
  • Staying home if you are sick, if possible
  • Avoiding visiting people in hospital or long-term care homes if you are sick; and
  • Getting your flu shot if you haven’t already done so as the flu virus is still circulating in the community.

Further relevant and up to date information that the Township receives will be communicated in a timely manner to all residents. Updates will be:

The Municipal Emergency Control Group (MECG) would like to remind the public not to rely only Social Media news and updates. It is recommended that all information should be cross checked and confirmed with accurate reliable sources from professionals.
