February 7 - Northwest Employment Works Workshop & Information Session
Northwest Employment Works will be hosting a Workshop and Information Session for area residents on Tuesday, February 7th at the Superior North CFDC, 7 Mill Road from 10:30am to 3:00pm. Learn the key components for active job searching, and Employment Advisors will be onsite and available to answer questions and help residents in their job search. January 31 - Winter Parking By-Law
This is a friendly reminder that in accordance with By-Law No. 95-18, The Uniform Traffic By-law, Section 22, Winter Overnight Parking, Subsection 22.1 No person shall park or stand a vehicle on a street or highway effective from 1:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m., between November 15th and April 15th of each calendar year. Please note that this By-law will be enforced. Thank you on behalf of the Township of Terrace Bay.

January 26 - Green Tradeshow being planned for May 5, 2012
The 2012 Green Tradeshow is being planned for Saturda, May 5, 2012 from 12:00pm to 4:00pm at the Terrace Bay Arena. This year's Tradeshow is featuring the first display model for Northwestern Ontario of the 2012 Chevy Volt - an electric car that is changing the automotive industry!

January 25 - Township Employee, Sean Irwin Wins Award

The Township of Terrace Bay is pleased to announce that Sean Irwin, Special Projects Coordinator, was the recipient of the "Top 20 Under 40" at the 1st Northwestern Ontario Visionary Awards. This innaugral event was held by the Thunder Bay Chamber of Commerce, NOACC and SHIFT Thunder Bay’s Young Professional Network.
This event was held to celebrate the successes of 66 nominees and 20 individual winners who under the age of 40 have made their mark in their communities or professional lives and are considered leaders by many.
Nathan Lawrence, President of SHIFT says “Young Professionals are the future of Northwestern Ontario and it is important to recognize those individuals who are doing great things in our communities. SHIFT is extremely proud of the TOP 20 under 40 Winners and all of the Nominees. Their hard work, volunteer hours and dedication are a testament to the immense amount of talent we have in our region.” |

January 19 - Supportive Housing Public Forum
The Terrace Bay Supportive Housing Committee hosted a public forum on Thursday January 19, 2012 and over 60 residents attended. The night included an update by Mayor Michael King on the activities of the committee to date and more information by Special Projects Coordinator Sean Irwin on what some of the next steps would include. Architect John Stephenson, from FORM Architecture who was hired to produce the feasibility study, also showed some conceptual drawings of what a unit could look like and how it would correspond to the two locations selected by the steering committee of the Former Legion site and the a green space on Beach Road. Those in attendance had many questions for the presenters and the audience was asked at the end of the presentation to give their feedback on a new survey. It’s the start of a New Year...is your resolution, like so many others, to get in shape? The Terrace Bay Recreation Department is now taking registrations for fitness classes! Choose from fun and exciting classes like Aerobics, Yoga and new this year ZUMBA – the latest fitness dance craze! So hurry and register today at the Terrace Bay Community Centre Office! Join together with the Community for the annual "Light Up The Night" at the Terrace Bay Cemetery on Sunday, December 18th, 2011 at 6:00pm to place candles, flowers, wreaths, etc at the site of your loved ones.

November 30 - Residential and Commercial Building Lots For Sale
The Township of Terrace Bay has identified a number of vacant building lots in the Municipality and has declared them surplus for the purpose of sale. The residential lots are in the areas of East Grove and Parkway Place and the commercial lots are at the end of Simcoe Plaza. The Municipality is following its bylaws in declaring the lots surplus and then offering them for sale for a 3 week period. Those interested in the lots can see information by visiting the Municipal Office to see a binder at the front desk or online at www.terracebay.ca/surplus.

The dates for the Annual Moonlight Madness event in Terrace Bay and Schreiber have been set. Participating businesses will be open late and feature great holiday sales.

November 11 - Terrace Bay Remembers
November 9 - Terrace Bay Wins Tourism Awards
Terrace Bay was recognized on November 9th with two awards at the prestigious North of Superior Tourism Association’s Annual General Meeting. The awards ceremony, held as part of the annual meeting, showcased some of the successes in the region’s tourism industry. The Municipality won awards for excellence in Municipal Marketing and as a Tourism Innovator for the use of the Terrace Bay Lighthouse within the Downtown Revitalization Project. CAO Carmelo Notarbartolo said “We are very honoured to have won these two awards and are grateful for the recognition by our peers. It really acknowledges all the hard work our staff has done in Terrace Bay.” The Terrace Bay Dragfest had been nominated by the Municipality in the incredibly competitive Tourist Event category and was a runner-up for the award.

October 15 - Hazardous Waste Day a Success
Terrace Bay held a hazardous waste recycling day on Saturday October 15th with visitors dropping off a variety of eligible waste. An estimated 95 cars attended the drive through style event with participants from Terrace Bay, Schreiber, and the surrounding region. The event was separated into two sections with volunteers accepting hazardous waste including paint cans, batteries, propane tanks, and other waste as well as an electronic waste drop off for televisions, computers, speakers, printers and more. Organizers estimate that approximately 5 tonnes of hazardous waste was collected and 2 tonnes of electronic waste. The event was held in partnership with Ontario Electronic Stewardship and recycleyourelectronics.ca for the electronic waste and through Stewardship Ontario for the hazardous waste. Potter Environmental from Thunder Bay was the provider of the Hazardous Waste services and Recool Canada Inc. assisted with the transportation of materials for the electronic waste depot. Hazardous Waste Days are part of Terrace Bay Council’s strategic plan for improving the environment and the event was ran by Municipal staff, a dedicated team of volunteers, and the Green Education Coordinator which is a partnership with EcoSuperior Environmental programs.

October 14 - Seniors Club Holds a Wellness Clinic
The Terrace Bay Superior Seniors Club held a Wellness Clinic today with a variety of valued speakers. Special Projects Co-ordinator Sean Irwin talked about some of the Municipalities plans for the future and other speakers included: Pharmacist Chris Stewart about new COPD testing and information on Stewart Guardian Pharmacy, North of Superior Programs Manager Laurie Knutsen about the health effects of music, and Thunder Bay District Health Unit Staff with an interactive display of healthy cooking. Great job on the event by the Superior Seniors Club!

October 13 - Terrace Bay Targeting Thunder Bay Retirees
As part of the Townships regular efforts to attract new residents, the Municipality has initiated a target marketing campaign to potential retirees from the City of Thunder Bay . Terrace Bay developed advertising in the Chronicle Journal New Horizons insert in the middle of September with the goal of reaching out to potential Thunder Bay retirees. The article highlighted the strengths of the community by identifying – a full complement of physicians, same day doctors appointments, excellent medical services by McCausland Hospital, Wilkes Terrace and Stewart Guardian Pharmacy, the friendly environment of the Superior Seniors Club, the new Cultural Centre with the seniors drop-in centre, the expanded public library, and the Michael king Hall among other things. The Seniors Club is also offering free community tours to anyone interested as part of the initiative and information packages have been developed for mailing out. The friendly, professional staff at Spadoni Motors Ltd. put on an interesting Green Car Care Clinic for residents. They provided helpful tips on how to maintain your vehicle and get the most out of your budget for fuel efficiency. They also donated some great prizes to those in attendance. September 11 - Fall Fair a Success!

The 30th Annual Fall Fair was held on Sunday, September 11th in the Terrace Bay Memorial Arena. The fair attracts arts & crafts vendors from the area and Thunder Bay, and local home based businesses and community service groups. This year there were 60 vendor tables and 750 attendees to the fair. Congratulations to Pegg Campbell - Five Forty Jewellery for winning the Most Creative Display at the Fall Fair. Also, the awards for the Tommy Duriez Most Dedicated Swimmer 2011 - Erin Bell and Most Improved Swimmer 2011 - Ahmed Mercan were presented to the swimmers by Pool Lifeguard/Instructor Aimee Richardson. |

September 13 - Library receives donation from Legion Branch 223
|
At the regular Terrace Bay Public Library Board meeting on Tuesday Sept 13, 2011, members of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 223 attended to present a cheque from their Nevada Fund to the Library Board in the amount of $1,000.00. Board Chair Irene Moore accepted the cheque on behalf of the library and expressed her thanks to the Branch for their generosity and for their recognition of the importance of the library to the community. Legion Branch president Joe Pelto stated that they will be closing their building in Terrace Bay but Branch 223 will remain active. |

August 30 - Downtown Video and End of Project Pictures Uploaded
A video chronicling the before, during and after stages of the downtown revitalization project has now been posted to the Municipal youtube page. August 26 - Lighthouse Street Festival a Hit!
The Township of Terrace Bay held its inaugural lighthouse street festival and it seemed like the entire town came out to celebrate. The festival was organized by the Municipality and its volunteer partners as a way to enjoy the new downtown area. Some of the festival activities included: giant inflatable castles, games for kids and all ages, Dottie the Clown, a show and shine, beer gardens and a street dance with DJ Mario from Santi Sounds. The event had excellent support from the businesses in the Township who featured special sidewalk and in-store sales and the restaurants brought their menu options outdoors under the plaza canopy. Different organizations from within the community also attended and fundraised or sold products underneath the plaza canopy. Mayor Michael King said “We are incredibly proud of the efforts of our volunteers and Municipal staff at organizing the event. Our businesses have done a great job showing off what they have to offer and overall I think everyone who attended was quite pleased and hopeful we do this again”. Attendance at the event was estimated at just over 1,000 people with counts being done throughout the day. ugust 2 - Jackfish Bay Status of Beneficial Use Impairments Report
The Jackfish Bay Area in Recovery had a report completed in September 2010 outlining the status of a variety of research done on the site which is now available to the public. Please download here, or visit the Terrace Bay Municipal Office for a print copy.
July 29-31 - Dragfest Weekend Brings in the Visitors
The 2011 Dragfest was another huge success with visitors coming from throughout Canada and the United States. The event attracted 210 cars and over 8,000 visitors to the 3 day drag racing festival which also featured a show and shine, vendors, and great food. July 27 - Mining Interest on Outskirts of Terrace Bay
Balmoral Resources Ltd. and GTA Resources and Mining Inc. have finalized a property option agreement in regards to positive mineral sampling results they have found on the Worthington Bay property South of the Township of Schreiber. July 25 - Terrace Bay Marketing to City of Thunder Bay Residents
Terrace Bay has begun a targeted marketing campaign with the goal of attracting visitors from the City of Thunder Bay. Two billboard spaces have been rented in Thunder Bay at prominent locations in front of the great Canadian Superstore on the Harbour Expressway and behind Wal-Mart on Water Street. The billboards feature the new Terrace Bay Lighthouse and the great outdoors which the Township view as a fit with potential visitors. The Municipality has also created a webpage with the domain name www.enjoyterracebay.ca which features 1 and 2 day trip itineraries to assist tourists plan their trip. July 25 - NOHFC Invests in Terrace Bay Solar
Congratulations to Terrace Bay Solar who received $100,000 from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation! Local entrepreneur John Turcotte will be using the investment to purchase equipment for the startup of a solar panel and installation company. July 20 - Downtown Revitalization Ribbon Cutting!
The Township of Terrace Bay held its ribbon cutting today to celebrate the success of the Terrace Bay downtown revitalization project with its partners. Chief Administrative Officer Carmelo Notarbartolo started off the event as Master of Cermonies and other speakers included Minister Michael Gravelle, Katherine Turner, Manager for the Thunder Bay FedNor office, who spoke on behalf of Minister of Industry Tony Clement, Mayor Michael King, CIBC Small Business Account Manager Stephanie Fillion, Superior North CFDC Board Chair Michael Beno, and Downtown Committee Chair Horst Prager. CAO Notarbartolo thanked all of the project partners and also made special mention of the excellent working relationship with the Thunder Bay Ministry of Transportation Office and the support of the those unable to make the event including Minister of Transportation the Honourable Kathleen Wynne, Minister of Agriculture, Food, and Rural Affairs the Honourable Carol Mitchell, and Federal Minister of Industry Tony Clement. The ribbon cutting for the plaza was led by Minister Michael Gravelle and Mayor Michael King, with a later ribbon cutting on the Terrace Bay Lighthouse. The large crowd was invited to a free slice of cake and cupcakes on behalf of the Township and the contractor. The architectural firm for the project was Form Architecture from Thunder Bay and the general contracting company was LTL Contracting Ltd. July 20 - Wilkes Terrace Grand Opening Event
The grand opening of the new Wilkes Terrace Long-Term Care wing of the McCausland Hospital took place today at the site of the new building and approximately 200 people attended. The event featured speeches from the project stakeholders and the Minister of Northern Development, Mines and Forestry Michael Gravelle. The facility began accepting patients in May 2011 and has created 15 jobs in the community. For more information and project pictures, visit www.mccauslandhospital.com.
