North Shore LNG Project

North Shore Liquefied Natural Gas Project

The North Shore LNG Project is a collaboration among five Northwestern Ontario municipalities—Marathon, Terrace Bay, Schreiber, Manitouwadge, and Wawa. The project aims to transport LNG by truck from a plant in Nipigon to regasification facilities within each municipality, establishing a local natural gas delivery network. Northeast Midstream LP is collaborating on the project to design, build, and operate distribution mains, service pipes, LNG storage tanks, and vaporization systems.

In 2019, Ontario’s provincial government committed $27 million to construct the Nipigon LNG plant. By 2022, Lakeshore Natural Gas signed a letter of intent with Centarus Ltd. for a long-term compressed natural gas (CNG) supply agreement, initially shifting focus from LNG to CNG. However, as of early 2023, Marathon and Terrace Bay have resumed community consultations, and the LNG proposal is once again under consideration.
