Terrace Bay Waterfront Development Project
The Township of Terrace Bay successfully achieved one of its long-term strategic goals with the completion of its waterfront development project in 2021, which has enhanced the overall quality of life for local residents and boosted the local economy through increased tourism. Terrace Bay Beach saw the addition of a new beach pavilion, enhancing the experience for visitors to this scenic area, and a 300-metre-long boardwalk, which invites visitors to explore the natural beauty of the region.
The Terrace Bay Waterfront Development Study and Implementation Plan had identified the strategic potential of developing Terrace Bay Beach for its commercial waterfront opportunities and regional tourism growth.
The project was funded by FedNor ($1.1M), the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation ($1.5M), and the Métis Nation of Ontario ($8,600).
The completed Terrace Bay Waterfront Development Project has established a key attraction, creating a waterfront staging area that allows residents and tourists to easily access and fully experience Lake Superior, the Slate Islands Provincial Park, the Lake Superior Water Trail/Trans-Canada Trail, Parks Canada’s Lake Superior National Marine Conservation Area (NMCA), and the Casque Isles Hiking Trail, which forms part of the Voyageur Trail and the Trans-Canada Trail (The Great Trail).
